How CCBS Helps Boys Ages 10 to 15 …

and How YOU Can Help a Family Find Hope

At the beginning of this week on September 8th, a team of cyclists clipped into their pedals at the edge of Niagara Falls NY and began the 350-mile ride through the heart of the state. Final destination … Albany NY.

Cherokee Creek Boys School’s 3rd annual “BOTO’s Big Ride 2026” has begun.

Now you might find yourself thinking …

“What does a bike ride through New York have to do with a struggling 10- to 15-year-old boy in your living room?”

Well, more than you might think.

Pair of Cycling Shoes

Every mile those riders pedal is a statement … that teen mental health matters, that families deserve support and that no boy should have to navigate his hardest years alone.

And every dollar they raise goes directly to the CCBS Fire Keepers Scholarship Fund, making it possible for a boy who needs Cherokee Creek Boys School to get there.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Let’s start where it really begins – with the boy.

The Boy … Your Boy

Some mornings, you can feel it before anyone says a word.

Anxious Boy Under Pressure in need of coping skills for stress

Your son is quiet in a way that worries you.

Or loud in a way that exhausts you.

He’s falling behind at school – again.

He’s disappearing into screens for hours.

He’s pulling away from the family, from friends, from the things that used to make him light up.

You’ve tried talking. You’ve tried boundaries. You’ve tried tutors and therapists and taking away the iPad. And still, something feels off. Something feels stuck.

If that sounds familiar, this blog post is for you.

And if your son is doing fine … if you’re reading this as a friend, a neighbor, a colleague, someone who simply cares about kids and families … this blog is for you too.

Because one of the most powerful things any of us can do right now is show up for a family that is quietly struggling and doesn’t know where to turn.

That’s exactly what BOTO’s Big Ride is all about.

The Reality of Teen Mental Health Today

Let’s start with the truth, because parents who are worried deserve honesty, not platitudes.

Teen mental health is in crisis.

In 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Children’s Hospital Association jointly declared a National State of Emergency in Children and Teen Mental Health – a declaration that continues to resonate today as rates of anxiety, depression and behavioral challenges among boys remain stubbornly high.

Teen Mental Health | Emotional Development of Brain from Pressures and Influences

Boys between the ages of 10 and 15 are in one of the most pivotal – and vulnerable – windows of development. Their brains are rewiring. Their identities are forming. Their emotions are bigger than their ability to process them.

And for many boys, the pressures of school, social life and a world saturated with screens and social media arrive faster than their coping skills can keep up.

Emotional Development of Brain from Pressures and Influences

The result? Boys who look like they’re “acting out” when they may actually be struggling deeply. Boys who are labeled “lazy” or “defiant” when what they need is understanding and the right kind of support.

Does Any of This Sound Like Your Son?

Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS) was built specifically for boys ages 10 – 15 who are navigating challenges like:

None of these challenges make a boy broken.

They make him human – and they make him a candidate for exactly the kind of individualized, compassionate support that CCBS was designed to provide.

What CCBS Actually Does

And Why It Works

CCBS Residential Therapeutic Boarding School | One Size Does Not Fit AllCherokee Creek Boys School is a therapeutic residential boarding school – which means boys don’t just visit for therapy once a week.

They live it, breathe it and grow through it … every single day.

There is no one-size-fits-all program here, because no two boys are the same. Every student receives a customized plan that weaves together:

Therapeutic Support

Individual, group therapy and family involvement

Academic Structure

Designed for boys who have struggled in traditional schools

Physical Challenge and Adventure

Hiking, kayaking, team sports and outdoor experiences

Community and Belonging

For many boys at CCBS, it’s the first time they’ve felt truly seen. That sense of belonging is not a small thing. It can be the turning point.

Be Open to Outcome TypographyStanding at the center of it all – greeting everyone at the door of the campus lodge – is BOTO the Bear, CCBS’s beloved mascot, a tall, hand-carved wooden figure whose name carries the CCBS core philosophy, “Be Open To Outcome”.

For a boy who has spent years feeling like a failure, learning to stay open – to new outcomes, new possibilities, new versions of himself – can be genuinely life-changing.

BOTO is a daily, visible reminder that the story isn’t over. It’s just beginning.

How You Can Make A Difference

Why YOUR Support Matters More Than You Know

Maybe your son is thriving. Maybe you don’t have a son. Maybe you simply care about kids and families and want to do something that makes a difference.

This is your moment … “BOTO’s Big Ride”

Every year, a team of cyclists from CCBS – led by Executive Director, David LePere – sets off on a multi-day cycling journey to raise funds for the CCBS Fire Keepers Scholarship Fund.

This year, the 3rd Annual BOTO’s Big Ride is happening right now … September 8 – 12 … covering 350 miles from Niagara Falls NY to Albany NY.

The CCBS Fire Keepers Scholarship Fund exists for one reason: to support the families who need CCBS. Your donation can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

Every dollar contributed to the CCBS Fire Keepers Scholarship Fund – through CCBS’s partner organization, Choose Mental Health [ a 501(c)3 nonprofit ] – is earmarked specifically for CCBS families.

It helps a real boy, in a real family, get access to real care.

The Science of Giving

Giving Helps Everyone

Research on giving shows that there is genuinely good news.

According to clinical psychologist Dr. Megan Hays at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, generosity activates the brain’s reward system – boosting happiness, reducing stress, enhancing self-esteem and strengthening social connections.

Studies even suggest that giving, when driven by a genuine desire to help, is associated with a longer lifespan and a healthier immune profile.

In other words … giving helps you … and giving helps others.
But it also can help CCBS help others!

Donating to BOTO’s Big Ride is one of those moments where what’s good for someone else is also good for you.

That’s rare. Don’t let it pass.

Three Ways You Can Join The Ride and the Cause

You don’t need to ride 350 miles to make a difference. Here’s how to join the journey from wherever you are:

One Mile at a Time. One Boy at a Time

There’s a reason the CCBS team rides bikes across states to raise money for a scholarship fund. It’s not the most efficient fundraising method. It’s not the easiest.

But it’s meaningful … and meaning matters.

Every mile that the BOTO’S Big Ride team pedals in September is a mile ridden for a boy who is struggling to find his footing. Every dollar raised is a door opened for a family that thought the door was closed.

And every person who donates, shares or simply cheers the team on becomes part of a community that believes in something important …

  • That no boy should have to navigate his hardest years alone.
  • That families deserve support.
  • That one person – one donation, one share, one conversation – really can make a difference.

BOTO the Bear has been saying it from the lodge door for years: “Be Open To Outcome”

  • Be open to the possibility that your gift could change a life.
  • Be open to the idea that you have more power to help than you think.
  • Be open to what happens when a community of people decides to show up – for boys, for families, for each other.

That’s what BOTO’s Big Ride is really about.
And we’d love for you to be part of it.
