Teaching STEM, Art and Teamwork … One LEGO at a Time

LEGO League and STEM at CCCBS
A Hands-On Approach to Learning All the Elements of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) … along with Art and Teamwork for Good Measure!
Our Math teacher, Nick Linscott, loves to find ways to make math class more interesting, easier … and even fun! Sometimes he takes math out of the classroom and encourages the boys to participate in academic activities. LEGOs have always proved an effective teaching tool with young children when it comes to STEM. We decided to base part of our curriculum around LEGO stem activities such as the LEGO League.
What is LEGO League?
LEGO League is a hands-on, international robotics competition where student teams build a robot with a microprocessor to accomplish a goal. The program challenges students to solve real-world problems, working through a guided, global robotics program using LEGO® technology. The goal is to create solutions that help today’s students, families and educators build a better future together.
CCBS has entered teams in the LEGO League Competition since we opened over 20 years ago!
What are LEGO STEM Activities?
LEGO STEM activities are projects created by students that use LEGOs as building blocks for creativity in areas like math and science. It’s a firsthand approach to learning that combines art and teamwork with STEM focuses.
How Did CCBS Do?
This year, Nick received the trophy for “Outstanding Coach” in a tournament with 24 other teams. The students on each of the 24 teams were asked to submit their recommendation for an outstanding coach, and Nick was the winner.
CCBS Director, David LePere, and the most recent CCBS LEGO League team also honored Nick on our campus for receiving the award. We thanked him for successfully leading and guiding the CCBS LEGO League teams for 20 years and gave him the “Best Coach Ever” award!

Nick summarized the impact of LEGO League on CCBS as,
“Our participation in LEGO League provides our students with an opportunity for planning and preparation that closely mirrors some of the transformative experiences I had in Boy Scouts. My brothers, friends and I had the good fortune of being allowed … by our trusting and honorable Scoutmasters … to arrange and organize elaborate camping trips and service projects.
The teamwork and cooperative learning of LEGO League and the core values of FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), the organization that sponsors it, match the values we at CCBS espouse as well as those I grew up with in Scouts.”
We are extremely grateful for the leadership, guidance and exciting creative ways to learn that Nick provides to all our students!

Congratulations!!! Wonderful news!!!So deserving! Can’t wait to tell JJ. !!!!! You Rock Coach Nick!!!!
