How to Care for Every Child When One Needs Extra Support

Invisible, Glass-Children to an ADHD Sibling

When a child is diagnosed with ADHD or a learning challenge, the whole family feels it.

The siblings of the child, in particular, often feel misunderstood, overlooked or pressured to “be perfect.”

It’s totally normal, but it’s important to offer supports for siblings of ADHD children and address it early.

Understanding the Family Dynamic

Research shows that siblings of children with mental health or learning challenges often take on extra responsibilities, feel emotionally burdened or struggle academically and socially. They might even be called “glass children” … visible, but emotionally unseen. Recognizing this dynamic is the first step toward healthier family balance.

The Impact of ADHD on Siblings

Studies reveal that siblings frequently experience unfairness, stress, embarrassment or guilt when their brother’s ADHD takes center stage. Open conversations with siblings can help them feel included and emotionally supported.

Involving Siblings in a Healthy Way

Here are some ways to help support siblings of ADHD children with understanding and empathy so they feel involved, instead of feeling like a burdened:

  • Educate siblings about ADHD and learning differences. This will help them understand what it might be like to walk in their brother’s shoes.
  • Involve siblings in family meetings or support circles so they feel heard and valued.
  • Acknowledge each child’s needs. And remember, each child has unique needs regardless of a defined diagnosis or disability.
  • Carve out one-on-one time with each child.
  • Affirm each child’s unique strengths. Authentic praise is so important for confidence.
  • Normalize feelings of frustration or jealousy while also reassuring them of your unconditional love.
