Multi-Faceted Approach to Managing Anxiety and Helping Students Build Confidence and Resilience

According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO), adolescent mental health is a global concern:

World Health Organization (WHO) Logo
  • Anxiety, depression and behavioral disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents.
  • Globally, one in seven 10- to 19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder, accounting for 15% of the global burden of disease in this age group.
  • Failing to address adolescent mental health conditions can have long-term consequences, impairing both physical and mental well-being and limiting opportunities for a fulfilling adult life.

The Importance of Mental Health Interventions

The WHO emphasizes that mental health promotion and prevention interventions are crucial in helping adolescents manage their emotions, build resilience and navigate adversity. These interventions should be implemented through multiple platforms, including schools, healthcare settings and community programs to ensure accessibility … particularly for the most vulnerable youth.

The CCBS Approach to Managing Anxiety

The Cherokee Creek community teaches and guides students to develop essential skills for recognizing and managing anxiety in both academic and social settings. Students are able to practice and refine these new skills. They learn how to identify and advocate for their needs and how to transfer these new skills to their home environment and life after Cherokee Creek.

How Anxiety Affects Adolescents

Anxiety can impact multiple aspects of a boy’s life, including:

  • Appetite, mood and sleep patterns
  • Self-esteem and relationships with family and peers
  • Academic engagement, performance and focus
  • Athletic performance and motivation to participate in activities
  • Confidence in trying new things
