Beth and Ron’s Story: The Heart Behind the Story of Cherokee Creek Boys School
The foundation of Cherokee Creek Boys School is deeply personal, and the story of Cherokee Creek Boys School begins with one family’s search for hope.
In the early 1990s, Beth and her husband Ron were parenting a son who struggled with learning challenges, ADHD and adoption-related issues.
Despite years of searching for help, nothing seemed to truly support their family. Over time, behaviors escalated, and their home became what Beth describes as a “battlefield.”
They were exhausted, discouraged and heartbroken.
Everything changed when they found a therapeutic program in Northern Idaho designed for families like theirs. The experience brought healing not only to their son, but to their entire family. Hope returned. Their daughter began to heal. Laughter and joy slowly re-entered their home.
Co-Founder, Beth Black,
Shares the Story of Cherokee Creek Boys School
A residential, therapeutic boarding school built on relationship, intention, creativity and care.
That experience planted the seed … and became the opening chapter in the story of Cherokee Creek Boys School.
Beth and Ron envisioned a place where other families could find the same hope – a school built on relationship, intention, creativity and care. More than two decades later, that vision continues to guide every decision.
The Story of Cherokee Creek Boys School
Why Our Logo, Our Bear and Our Beginnings Matter!
When families first discover Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS), they often notice something right away.
There is a feeling here – a sense of warmth, intention and quiet confidence. That feeling is not accidental. It comes from a story that has been carefully shaped, lived and shared for more than 23 years.
At CCBS, story is not just something we tell. It is something we build upon. And the story of Cherokee Creek Boys School continues to grow with every student and family who arrives.
From the logo that represents moving forward together …
to BOTO the Bear greeting families at the lodge …
to the deeply personal journey that led Beth and Ron Black to found the school …
… every element of CCBS reflects a clear purpose …
to offer healing, hope and growth to boys and their families.
This is That Story
The Power of Story as a Foundation
Storytelling doesn’t just inform us – it teaches us.
Decades of research in education and neuroscience show that people learn and remember lessons more deeply when they are delivered through story rather than instruction alone. When we hear a story, our brains don’t simply process information – they simulate experience. We imagine, feel, reflect and make meaning along the way.
This matters deeply for boys, especially those who struggle with traditional learning or verbal instruction. Many boys don’t learn best through lectures or correction. They learn through doing, feeling and seeing themselves inside a story they can relate to.
That understanding is woven into the very fabric of Cherokee Creek Boys School – and it starts with how the school itself was imagined.
A Walk Down CCBS Memory Lane
The Quest for a Logo
Beth brought a unique background to this process. She was part of the opening team for Walt Disney World in Florida and spent 10 years helping create what is often called “Disney Magic,” training teams and teaching the importance of culture, values and storytelling. At Disney, every image tells a story – and that philosophy stayed with her.
So when it came time to design the CCBS logo, Beth picked up the phone and called someone she trusted deeply: Jim Cooper.
Jim was a graphic designer and artist for 25 years at Walt Disney World and later founded his own company, Twist Top Graphics. His work included major projects such as the EPCOT logo and the opening brochure for Euro Disney.
A small school with a big heart, where nature and outdoor experiences would play a vital role in helping boys grow and move forward.
Jim approached the logo from the perspective of a boy. “If I were a boy coming to Cherokee Creek,” he explained, “I would want to know that while the work might be hard, it would also be fun.”
The image he created beautifully tells the story of Cherokee Creek Boys School.
The logo features two boys paddling forward peacefully in a canoe – a symbol of movement, teamwork and shared journey.
Because “Creek” is in the school’s name, water became central to the image.
With “Cherokee” in the name, Jim incorporated a subtle nod to Native American heritage: the dark blue triangle beneath the canoe represents water while also evoking the shape of an arrowhead.
Behind the canoe, the sun rises – bringing light, hope and warmth into the scenario.
The message is quiet but powerful …
You are not alone.
You are moving forward.
There is light ahead.
Meet BOTO the Bear: Mascot, Greeter and Guide
If the logo represents Cherokee Creek on paper, BOTO the Bear brings that story to life – with a wave, a grin and a whole lot of heart.
If BOTO were telling this part himself, he might start like this: “Hi! I’m BOTO. Welcome to Cherokee Creek. I’m really glad you’re here.”
BOTO officially joined the CCBS team in 2021 as the school’s mascot and greeter. As families arrive on campus and walk toward the lodge, BOTO is often there – waving, smiling and helping everyone feel just a little more at ease.
He’ll be the first to tell you that rainy and cold days aren’t his favorite, but he loves his job because he gets to help students, parents, staff and visitors feel welcome. And if he can add a smile to someone’s day? BONUS!
But BOTO’s story began long before he ever wore a mascot suit – or a raincoat.
Over 20 years ago, while Cherokee Creek was still a dream, Beth remembers saying to the headmaster, “We need a mascot – something purposeful, something that supports our hopes and vision for the school and the boys.”
The very next morning, the answer arrived … black bear paw prints appeared on the driveway in front of the lodge.
As the team reflected on this unexpected visitor, they discovered that the symbolism of the bear aligned perfectly with what they wanted for their students.
Bears represent introspection, healing, wisdom, solitude, transformation and strength – all qualities Cherokee Creek hopes boys will discover within themselves.
In a very real sense, the bear chose Cherokee Creek, becoming a living symbol within the story of Cherokee Creek Boys School.
That presence still lingers today – and BOTO embodies that spirit daily. If asked, BOTO might humbly admit that he sees himself as part greeter, part encourager and part quiet reminder that growth happens one step at a time.
BOTO’s name also carries meaning. It comes from a guiding principle that became a beloved mantra at CCBS: B.O.T.O. – Be Open To Outcome
Rooted in the value of wisdom, BOTO reminds boys, families and staff to loosen their grip on control and stay open to curiosity, flexibility and new possibilities.
In 2024, BOTO added another role: CCBS Blogger. Each week, he helps share stories, updates and insights from campus. And yes – he’ll proudly tell you that one of the most common questions he gets is how he got his name 😉
BOTO is more than a mascot. He is a symbol of hope, possibility and welcome – a friendly reminder that at Cherokee Creek, meaningful work and joy can exist side-by-side.
Living the Story Every Day
Organizations with a clear mission and authentic story tend to build stronger cultures and deeper trust. As author and leadership expert, Simon Sinek, famously said …
“People don’t buy WHAT you do;
they buy WHY you do it.”
^ TED Talk by Simon Sinek ^
That mission is supported by core values …
Safety, Quality, Creativity,
Fun and Self-Discovery
… and brought to life through experiential learning, family involvement and a community-centered approach.
At CCBS, boys don’t just hear who they can become. They experience it.
And that experience becomes part of their story – one they carry forward long after they leave campus, weaving the story of Cherokee Creek Boys School into their own lives.
It’s the FOUNDATION.
