For Moms with Struggling Boys Searching for Help, Hope and Healing
Parenting is never easy.
But when your son is struggling … with ADHD, autism spectrum challenges, learning differences, social struggles or emotional ups and downs … the weight can feel overwhelming. Many moms carry this weight silently, trying to hold everything together while feeling judged, isolated or simply worn out.
If this describes you, you are not alone. And you don’t have to walk this road by yourself.
At Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS), a therapeutic boarding school for boys ages 10 – 15, we’ve learned something powerful:
When moms with struggling boys connect with other moms on a similar journey, healing happens.
That’s why our program includes intentional ways to support mothers … because we know your well-being matters as much as your son’s.
One of the most cherished traditions here is the Mama Bear Retreat … a special time for moms to rest, connect and be nurtured.
Why Moms with Struggling Boys Need Support
Research consistently shows that parents’ well-being directly impacts their childrens’ emotional health and development. A recent study in the American Journal of Public Health found that the stronger a parent’s social support, the more likely children are to thrive psychologically.
When moms feel supported, they are better able to engage warmly and consistently with their children … leading to fewer behavioral struggles and stronger bonds.
Unfortunately, many moms with struggling boys report the opposite. According to the Pew Research Center’s Parenting in America Today survey, nearly half of mothers say parenting is more exhausting than they expected and many feel judged for their choices.
This sense of isolation can be even more intense when a child faces learning or behavioral challenges. Psychologist Suniya Luthar, in her research on mothers’ well-being, put it beautifully:
“It is my earnest wish that women can commonly come to prioritize and to regularly receive themselves, the steadfast love and care that is uniquely associated with the term ‘mothering.’”
In other words … moms need mothering, too
The Hidden Struggles of Moms with Struggling Boys
Much of the parenting support world is focused on the early years … mom groups for newborns, playdates for toddlers, endless advice about sleep schedules and feeding. But when kids become teenagers, the resources and support for moms shrink dramatically.
As NPR reported in their article Moms of Teens Can Benefit From Social Support, Just Like New Moms …
“Raising teenagers can be just as overwhelming as raising toddlers, but the support systems often fall away.”
The study behind the article showed that mothers of teens who had strong social networks were more likely to maintain warm, connected relationships with their kids, even during tough times.
Another NPR piece, Being Mom to a Middle Schooler Can Be the Toughest Gig of All, highlighted how isolating it can feel when your child isn’t “perfect” by social standards. Many moms feel ashamed to share the truth about their child’s struggles … worried others won’t understand.
The truth is, no child is perfect and no parent should have to feel alone in the journey.
Enter the Mama Bear Retreat
This is where CCBS’s Mama Bear Retreat steps in. As founder Beth Black explains:
“Twice a year, I host a retreat for 5 – 10 moms who have sons at CCBS along with someone from our CCBS team. The retreats take place at relaxing venues that pamper the moms and offer them time for both rest and play. Although there is an official program, much of the healing and fun happens around the kitchen table at breakfast, in small group chats while preparing meals or after dinner once the program is over.”
The retreats are built on a simple truth: moms need each other. Beth continues:
“As a mom, I know how painful and lonely it is to be the mother of a struggling child. When you find someone who really understands the challenges of this journey, it is a time for celebration! A circle of women has a magical power to promote healing through time-shared, nonjudgmental conversations and the release of fear and burdens with people who can truly say, ‘What? You too? I thought I was the only one.’”
The result? Deep friendships, emotional relief and renewed energy for the road ahead. Many moms describe leaving the retreat with restored spirits, a sense of belonging and a new “tribe” to walk alongside them.
This fall’s retreat is at the beginning of October and as always, it can be a life-giving experience for every mom who attends.
Moms with Struggling Boys Share Their Stories
Sometimes, the most healing words come from other moms who’ve been there.
At the CCBS 20th Anniversary Celebration in 2023, several alumni moms shared the impact of the school and the network of mothers they found through CCBS. Their reflections remind us that while our sons do the hard work of growth at CCBS, the moms are growing too … through courage, vulnerability and the support of each other.

The Bigger Picture: Family Involvement at CCBS
While the Mama Bear Retreat is a highlight, it’s only one piece of the broader CCBS Family Center.
The Family Center isn’t a building, but a philosophy and set of experiences woven into the program.
From family seminars to sibling events, CCBS believes in equipping the whole family for long-term success.
As Cherokee Creek Boys School explains:
And at the heart of that family involvement are the moms … the ones who often carry the emotional weight and who deserve space to heal, rest and connect.
And we also have retreats for DADS! In fact one is also taking place this month!
Practical Encouragement for Moms
Even if your son isn’t at CCBS, the lessons from the Mama Bear Retreat can apply to you today:
Find Your Circle
Whether it’s other moms at your school, an online support group or a local therapist-led circle, seek out people who get it.
Give Yourself Permission to Rest
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Small breaks for self-care can restore your patience and resilience.
Drop the Judgment
Every child’s path is unique. Comparing yourself … or your son … to others only steals your energy.
Celebrate Small Wins
Progress is often slow and nonlinear, but each step matters.
Ask for Help
Whether it’s professional counseling, family support or a trusted friend, you don’t need to do this alone.
Final Thoughts
If you are a mom reading this because your heart is heavy for your son, please hear this …
you are not alone.
Parenting a struggling boy is not a reflection of your failure … it’s a journey that requires courage, compassion and community.
At Cherokee Creek Boys School, we’ve seen the incredible transformation that happens when moms support moms. Whether through a Mama Bear Retreat, a Family Seminar or simply a heartfelt phone call, the bonds formed are life-giving.
So if you’re carrying the weight of worry today, may you find your own circle of support … and maybe even join us at the next Mama Bear Retreat.
Sometimes, the bravest thing a Mama Bear can do is to …
