May is Mental Health Awareness Month

You Can Make a Difference!
Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 by the Mental Health America organization to help educate the public about mental illness, raise awareness surrounding research and treatments, reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and celebrate treatment and recovery.
Today it is more important than ever for all of us to recognize the role mental health plays in our overall well-being.
Mental Health Awareness Month also provides an opportunity for fundraising, outreach and awareness events that can help create a brighter, more promising future for mental health care.
Here are a few sobering statistics on Mental Health and youth!
Did you know that, according to Mental Health America, a 2023 study found that:
- Nationally, only 28% of youth with severe depression receive some consistent treatment (7 – 25+ visits in a year). Most (57.3%) youth with severe depression do not receive any care.
- Nationally, 1 in 10 youth who are covered under private insurance do not have coverage for mental or emotional difficulties – totaling over 1.2 million youth.
Affordability of appropriate care creates dangerous barriers for youth in need of mental health care.

Thank you … and may we always remember The Starfish Parable.

“One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, ‘Young man, what are you doing?’
‘Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die,’ the boy replied.
The man laughed to himself and said, ‘Do you realize there are miles of miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference.’
After listening politely, the boy bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the surf. Then, he smiled at the man and said, ‘I made a difference to that one.‘”
