Learn How FISHING Can Have a Positive Impact on Mental Health

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month.

It’s an annual observance that has been in place since 1949, with the American Hospital Association leading the way. The purpose is to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and promote understanding and support for those affected by mental health conditions.

At Cherokee Creek Boys School, many of our students love to be in nature … and going fishing is a favorite activity.  Being in the outdoors, near the water, and patiently waiting to reel in a fish have been found to have a positive effect on mental health.

Learn more about how fishing can support mental health in a blog by Professional Fisherman, Kenneth Reeves, on NAMI’s (The National Alliance on Mental Illness) website … LINK.

“Consider fishing as a metaphor for overcoming your emotional struggles — there will be good days and bad ones, but success lies in pushing forward, one day and one skill at a time. Ultimately, one of my greatest takeaways from the sport is how emotional resilience puts you in charge of your growth.”
