How Art Teaches Self-Expression and Brings Families Together at Cherokee Creek Boys School

Valuable Life Lessons … with an Artistic Flare

At Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS), art is not about perfection or expertise. It is about self-expression, creativity and learning to see the world in new and different ways.
Through a wide variety of artistic projects, students have the opportunity to engage with art in a way that encourages personal growth, emotional expression and teamwork.
“The pursuit of art on a regular basis may be the key to healing our minds and bodies.”
– Kim Blair
CCBS Students’ Self-Expression Beautifully Comes to Life
Students at CCBS participate in diverse artistic activities, from drawing and painting to sculpting and pottery.
Art projects might include charcoal drawings, acrylic painting, jewelry making, clay pottery or even building birdhouses.
This week students officially unveiled a special art project they had worked on together at the CCBS Family Seminar.

CCBS Students’ Deer in a Stream Mural Hanging in Our Lodge
The boys proudly presented a beautiful mural on the wall of the lodge that they created … depicting the beauty of nature featuring a serene landscape and a beautiful deer in the mountains. It is across from a previous mural they created featuring a bear with its cub (see below) The mural was applauded and appreciated by parents and the staff.
Our CCBS Art Teacher, Holly Hamilton, shared that …
“At CCBS, art is not just an academic subject; it is a therapeutic tool that allows students to explore their emotions, develop patience and build confidence. Many projects span several weeks, teaching students the value of persistence and the satisfaction of completing something meaningful. Grades in art class are not based on skill level, but rather on effort, self-expression, participation and perseverance.
Many students begin with hesitation, unsure of their artistic abilities. However, as they engage in projects and witness their progress, they gain confidence and start to look forward to creative expression. The art program encourages boys to take pride in their work and to experience joy in their accomplishments.”
The CCBS Art Program provides students with a safe and encouraging environment to explore their creativity. It fosters a sense of community, self-discovery and emotional healing.

Another Beautiful CCBS Student Mural Proudly Hangs in the Lodge Across from the New Mural Unveiled this Week
Whether working individually or collaborating on large-scale projects like the mural, the boys learn valuable life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Through art, they discover new ways to express themselves, connect with others and take pride in their accomplishments.
Holly also reminded us that,
“Art is not just about what happens on the campus. The impact of art extends beyond the classroom. Many students send their artwork home, offering their families a tangible representation of their personal growth and achievements. Parents often express deep gratitude for these pieces, cherishing them as meaningful symbols of their child’s journey.
Art can help bring families together.
Many parents tell us that they will save those gifts for the rest of their lives.”
