Enjoying the benefits of gaming such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity … while understanding the importance of balance.
“Parenting today has a completely new set of challenges. A lot of the old advice just doesn’t work anymore. That’s why we help parents navigate the digital age with new skills and the latest science.”
– Dr. Alok Kanojia, MD, MPH

In today’s digital world, gaming has become a significant part of many kids’ lives. At Cherokee Creek Boys School, we recognize the benefits of gaming such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity … while also understanding the importance of balance.
That’s why we’re excited to share some healthy gaming techniques for both kids and parents, inspired by a book that our teacher, Cameron Kerr, found particularly helpful.
The Book That Changed the Game | How to Raise a Healthy Gamer
- An explanation of the psychology and neuroscience behind a child’s interest in gaming.
- Tips for creating healthy gaming boundaries.
- Communication strategies to connect with your child.
- Insights on addressing ADHD, spectrum disorders and substance abuse in relation to gaming.
- Advice for managing mood shifts and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
Helping Our CCBS Students Maintain Healthy Gaming Habits
Inspired by Dr. K’s work, Cameron has been incorporating these insights into his approach at Cherokee Creek Boys School. He recently conducted a class with students to help them understand how to enjoy video games while maintaining balance in their lives. The session included:
- Setting Boundaries
The boys explored their personal reasons for playing video games and reflected on how gaming fits into their lives. - Guided Gaming Session
They set a timer and played video games for 30 minutes. - Smooth Transition Back to Offline Activities
The group discussed how to shift away from gaming and return to other forms of play, like outdoor activities and social interactions.
The students responded positively, with many finding the structure helpful. The key elements of success included:
- A Clear Plan
Defining what game they would play ahead of time. - Expectations Set Early
Establishing rules about how to engage with the game and technology. - A Defined End Point
Making sure the transition away from gaming was smooth and intentional.
Helpful Gaming Tips for Parents
Cameron also shared several key insights for parents looking to manage their child’s gaming habits effectively:
- Approach Gaming as a Partner, Not an Opponent
Play alongside your child rather than just enforcing restrictions. - Try Playing Together
Engaging in gaming with your child can help foster connection and understanding. - Be Patient … It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Healthy gaming habits take time to develop; parents can guide the process rather than expect overnight changes. - Keep an Open Mind
Instead of judging gaming, approach it with curiosity and a willingness to understand. - Encourage Positive Use of Technology
Rather than demonizing gaming, help your child integrate it into a balanced life.
