ABOUT the AUTHOR

Amy Gunter is the Family Center Manager at Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS), our residential therapeutic boarding school for boys ages 10 – 15. Amy joined the CCBS team in 2016 and has served in a variety of roles, including working directly with students, overseeing scheduling, coordinating student transportation and organizing staff training.

Serving as the CCBS Family Center Manager, Amy helps families stay connected and engaged throughout their son’s journey. The Family Center offers parent education, family seminars, retreats, adventures, family therapy opportunities and transition support designed to strengthen families every step of the way.

This year, I am celebrating my 10th anniversary at CCBS.

10-Year Anniversary with Cherokee Creek Boys School

When I first joined the Cherokee Creek team in 2016, I couldn’t have imagined how much I would learn from the boys and families who walk through our doors.

Over the last decade, I’ve had the privilege of serving in many different roles – working directly with students, coordinating schedules and transportation, helping train staff and eventually leading our Family Center in supporting family involvement in our boys’ journey.

If there is one lesson that stands above all the others, it’s this …

The most meaningful transformations happen when families grow alongside their son.

  • I’ve watched boys find confidence they never knew they had.
  • I’ve seen parents who arrived feeling exhausted and discouraged begin to smile again.
  • I’ve seen families move from conflict and disconnection to understanding and hope.
  • And I’ve heard many parents tell us something I never take for granted:

“Cherokee Creek didn’t just help our son. It helped save our family.”

Every family’s story is different, but those words remind me why family involvement has always been such an important part of what we do at CCBS.

The Phone Calls I’ll Never Forget

Mother Making a Desperate Phone Call

When parents first contact Cherokee Creek Boys School, they’re often carrying far more than concern.

They’re carrying years of worry.

Many have spent countless nights lying awake wondering how to help their son.

Many have tried therapy, tutors, doctors, different schools, new approaches.

Sometimes they feel like they’ve tried everything.

Their son may be struggling with ADHD, anxiety, learning differences, autism spectrum disorder (Level 1), technology addiction, emotional challenges, school refusal or declining academic performance.

Often, parents are exhausted from living in crisis mode. And perhaps most heartbreaking of all – they feel alone. I hear it in their voices.

Many parents are not simply looking for a therapeutic boarding school.

They’re looking for HOPE.

They’re looking for someone to UNDERSTAND.

They’re looking for a PATH FORWARD.

If you’re early in that search process and trying to understand what a therapeutic boarding school for boys actually looks like, I encourage you to learn more about Cherokee Creek Boys School and our approach to helping boys ages 10 – 15 who are struggling academically, emotionally or socially.

What I want those parents to know is this:

You are not alone.

And your son doesn’t have to walk this journey alone either.

Why Family Involvement Matters

Research consistently shows that family involvement is one of the strongest predictors of long-term success for children and adolescents.

We’ve written previously about the important role family involvement plays in adolescent growth, healing and sustainable success. You can read more in our blog,
The Role of Family in Teen Growth and Development. That makes sense when you think about it.

Families are where children learn how to:

  • Communicate.
  • Handle challenges.
  • Build relationships.
  • Navigate life’s ups and downs.

When a boy is struggling, the answer is rarely found in helping only the child. Real and lasting change happens when the entire family begins learning, growing and healing together.

At Cherokee Creek, we often talk about creating a parallel journey.

While students are developing new skills, parents are developing new skills, too. While boys are learning about accountability and communication, parents are learning new tools and perspectives as well.

The Vision Behind Cherokee Creek

One of the things I love most about Cherokee Creek is that our family-centered approach didn’t come from a textbook. It came from lived experience. Our founders, Beth and Ron Black, walked this road themselves.

Beth and Ron Black, Owners / Founders of CCBSAs parents of a struggling son, they understand the fear, frustration and heartbreak families often experience. Beth has shared that when her own son attended a therapeutic program, he made tremendous progress.

But when it was time for him to come home, they realized something important: The family hadn’t been learning alongside him. They didn’t have the same tools. They didn’t have the same understanding. And they weren’t fully prepared for the transition.

That experience helped shape Cherokee Creek Boys School.

From the very beginning, Beth and Ron designed a therapeutic boarding school where families would be involved every step of the way. Not because it’s a nice addition to the program. Because it’s essential.

The family-centered philosophy at Cherokee Creek was born from Beth and Ron Black’s own experience raising a struggling son and searching for answers.

The Heart of Our Family Center

Cherokee Creek Boys School Family Center

People sometimes assume our Family Center is a building on campus.

It is not.

The Family Center is something MUCH bigger.

It’s a commitment.

It’s a philosophy.

It’s an ongoing effort to keep families CONNECTED, ENGAGED and SUPPORTED throughout their son’s experience at Cherokee Creek.

CCBS Family Center We share photos, newsletters, updates and educational opportunities.

We create experiences where families can learn together.

We help parents understand the same concepts and tools their son is learning.

Most importantly, we help families stay connected to one another.

Because one of the most powerful things that happens at Cherokee Creek has nothing to do with a building.

It has to do with RELATIONSHIPS.

Our Family Center includes family seminars, parent education, retreats, adventures, family therapy opportunities and transition support designed to help families stay connected and engaged throughout the process.

Families often tell us that one of the most reassuring discoveries here is learning they won’t be navigating this journey alone. You can learn more about the CCBS Family Center and the many ways we support and engage families throughout their son’s experience below.

Something Beautiful Happens When Parents Find Each Other

One of my favorite parts of my job is watching parents discover they are not alone.

At first, many arrive feeling isolated. They assume nobody else understands what they’re going through. Then they sit down next to another parent.

They hear a familiar story. They recognize the same fears. The same struggles. The same hopes. And suddenly something changes.

Connection replaces isolation.
Hope begins replacing fear.
Friendships begin to form.

Over the years, we’ve seen parents build relationships that continue long after their son graduates. Many stay in touch. Many support one another. Many become lifelong friends.

Recently, we’ve seen this happen through our Homeward Bound webinars as well. In fact, we’ve received wonderful feedback about the way Cherokee Creek parents participate.

Our families show up authentically. They ask thoughtful questions. They share openly. They encourage one another. What started as support for their own family often becomes support for other families, too.

That’s the kind of community you can’t manufacture. It grows naturally when people feel safe enough to be real.

Cherokee Creek Boys School | Therapeutic Boys School | Amy Gunter | Family Center Manager“One of the things that makes me proudest is watching our parents support one another. Over the years, we’ve seen Cherokee Creek families create meaningful connections that extend far beyond campus. Some continue talking regularly long after their sons graduate. Others meet for dinner during Family Seminars, connect between events or simply reach out when another parent needs encouragement. Those relationships aren’t created by a program requirement. They’re created because people who have walked a similar path understand one another in a way that few others can. For many families, that sense of community becomes one of the most valuable and unexpected parts of their Cherokee Creek experience.”

Seeing Cherokee Creek Through Your Son’s Eyes

One of the most meaningful changes we made a few years ago was bringing our quarterly Family Seminars onto campus. For years, these events were held at a beautiful conference center away from Cherokee Creek.

Today, families attend those 2- and 3-day seminars here on campus. And the difference has been remarkable.

Parents don’t just hear about life at Cherokee Creek.
They EXPERIENCE it.

Parents can join their son for breakfast or lunch. They can stand beside him in the dining hall line, sit together at the picnic tables, observe daily routines and meet many of the staff members, students and families who are part of his everyday life.

Those simple experiences often provide parents with something incredibly valuable … a genuine window into their son’s world.

  • Kid's Daily ADHD and Routines Chart with StopwatchThey get to walk the same paths their sons walks.
  • They spend time in the lodge.
  • They share meals together.
  • They sit at picnic tables.
  • They meet staff members.
  • They connect with other families.
  • And perhaps most importantly, they get to see their son in his daily environment.

I can’t tell you how many times parents have told us how meaningful that experience is.

They see their son …

Many arrive carrying worry. They leave carrying something else … a clearer picture of who their son is becoming.

We Never Want This Work to Feel Like a Checklist

Illustration of a Clipboard with a ChecklistOne of the things I appreciate most about Cherokee Creek is that we never lose sight of the human side of this journey.

YES … growth mattersaccountability mattersskill-building matters.

But families are not projects. And healing is not a checklist.

Real change happens through …

  • Relationships.
  • Honesty.
  • Introspection.
  • Support.
  • Moments of connection that often can’t be measured on a progress report.

We try to leave room for people to simply be people. To …

  • Connect.
  • Share.
  • Laugh.
  • Cry.
  • Grow.

The HEART matters.
And we never want to lose sight of that.

Preparing for Life Beyond Cherokee Creek

One of the things that truly sets Cherokee Creek apart is our commitment to helping families prepare for what comes next. Because ultimately, our goal is not just success while a student is enrolled.

Our goal is success when he returns home. That is why our TRANSITION PROGRAM is such an important part of the journey.

Cherokee Creek Boys School Transitioning Back Home IconWe work intentionally to help families prepare for life after Cherokee Creek.

We want parents to feel equipped, confident to understand how to continue applying the lessons they’ve learned together.

Because the real world doesn’t begin after graduation. The real world is what we’re preparing for all along – the entire time that their son is at Cherokee Creek.

A Message to Parents

If you’re reading this because your son is struggling, I want to leave you with something I’ve learned over the last ten years.

There is HOPE!

Even when things feel overwhelming. Even when you’ve tried multiple approaches. Even when you’re exhausted.

I know firsthand that many parents arrive at Cherokee Creek carrying a tremendous amount of stress and uncertainty. If that sounds familiar, you may also find encouragement in our blog, A Practical, Hopeful Guide for Families Navigating Stress Together, which offers practical strategies for helping both parents and boys navigate difficult seasons.

There is hope. I’ve seen boys discover strengths they didn’t know they had. I’ve seen parents rediscover joy, families rebuild trust and relationships heal. And I’ve seen what can happen when parents choose to stay engaged every step of the way.

Colorful

At Cherokee Creek Boys School, we believe family involvement isn’t something that happens on the sidelines. It’s one of the most important parts of the journey. Because when a boy knows his family is learning, growing and walking beside him, he isn’t carrying the weight alone. And neither are you.

CCBS Slogan with Family Camping: As our mission reminds us, we are here to “challenge boys and their families to discover what is real and true about themselves and the world around them.”

In my experience, some of the most powerful discoveries happen when families make that journey together.

Over the years, I’ve learned that healing rarely happens in isolation. Boys need support. Parents need support. Families need support.

When everyone is willing to learn, grow and stay engaged in the process, remarkable things can happen. That’s why family involvement isn’t just part of what we do at Cherokee Creek Boys School – it is one of the foundations upon which everything else is built.

Beth Black, Owner / Founder of CCBS“We designed Cherokee Creek Boys School to not only support the parents but to involve them every step of the way. Family involvement is a key pillar to helping families find success on their journey.”
