The Family Center

Just Another Way We are Different from other Therapeutic Boarding Schools

“There is no more powerful, sustaining force than the love of family, and restoring the family as the center of our culture is urgent and critical to the future of the country.”

– Dr. William Friday, President, Emeritus
University of North Carolina

The Cherokee Creek mission commits us to “challenge boys and their families to discover what is real and true about themselves and the world around them.”

The CCBS Family Center is not a physical place but a program of events designed to provide parents with opportunities for respite, learning, and rebuilding families. One of the reasons we are different among therapeutic boarding schools is that we offer parent education programming to support you while your son is at Cherokee Creek. These Family Center activities are important to you… but they are a critical part of your son’s program!

We know that as your student changes and grows, it is imperative that everyone in the family learns and grows as well. The #1 factor for the long-term, sustained success of a student is FAMILY INVOLVEMENT! Our program actively engages parents, siblings and other family members in the process of self-discovery to assure the highest sustainable outcome for everyone.

Important Dates to Remember

Celebrating 20 Years of Serving Boys and Their Families!

In efforts to best support important family visits and also support best practices for COVID protocols, the following schedule and details have been developed.

We know how incredibly important it is for our families to have time together, so we have remained focused on preparing for and supporting healthy ways for our students to spend time with their families.

PLANNING DETAILS

  • All family visit recommendations are individualized per family for each break.

  • Families will work closely with their son’s Primary to plan and finalize all details (such as length, location of visits, etc.)

  • During academic break weeks there are a variety of field trips, activities and adventures planned for the students. (As all visits are individualized, it's common to have students coming and going throughout the week.)

FAMILY THERAPY SESSIONS

On campus, Family Therapy Sessions will be available in conjunction with visits and Family Seminar events. Schedule a family session with your therapist for either your pick-up or drop-off dates. Be sure to schedule this session so it does not conflict with the parent curriculum workshop. (If you aren’t coming to campus as part of the visit, please connect with your therapist to schedule a virtual therapy session.)

The Thursday and Friday at the start of visits are academic days and may be Family Seminar dates. The last Monday of the break is also an academic day. This will be considered with visit planning.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there to help our son regain his greatness. After attending Family Seminar, my husband and I are confident Jimmy will be whole again. The compassion of all the staff we encountered has reassured us that we truly found the best program for our son. Working with our child the way you have has given us hope for our families’ future. A day doesn’t go by that we don’t think of how blessed we are to have your dedication to improving Jimmy’s life. I can never thank you enough.”

“Just wanted to drop a line and let you know how awesome the seminar was this past weekend! The Boundaries workshop was excellent and I really appreciate the scripts for the future. I really appreciate the extra effort it takes to keep the families informed and the family services and training you provide so our boys can be successful at home. You have made an incredible difference in my life as well as my whole family. Thank you!”
