Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with organizations of every size … from global corporations to family-owned businesses and in every kind of industry you can imagine.

One consistent truth has stood out across all those experiences. When people understand their true colors … their own strengths, preferences and personality style and of those around them … communication improves, teamwork strengthens and confidence grows.

Programs such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), DISC and True Colors have been invaluable tools in helping people see their strengths, preferences and natural tendencies. They not only improve productivity, leadership and customer service in the workplace, but also build healthier, more understanding relationships at home.

That’s one of the many reasons I admire Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS) … a small therapeutic boarding school for boys ages 10 – 15.

The CCBS team has made understanding personality and learning style a key part of their approach. They know that when a boy (and his family) understands how he’s wired … what motivates him, how he learns and what makes him feel confident … it changes everything.

Why Personality and Style Matter

So often we assume everyone thinks and reacts the same way we do. But we don’t! Our unique style shapes how we process information, make decisions and communicate with others.

When families or teams don’t understand these differences, it’s easy for frustration and misunderstanding to take root. But when we can say, “Oh, that’s just your Gold showing up” or “I see your Orange energy coming through,” a potential conflict can quickly turn into connection.

At CCBS, this kind of self-awareness is part of the learning process. The curriculum is designed around each boy’s strengths, challenges and learning preferences, which allows teachers and therapists to meet them where they are.

The True Colors program helps to add to that and create a language for people to express what they need and to learn about what others need as well. For example … after you understand your True Colors you might realize that:

Orange

Orange personalities thrive on movement, hands-on learning and a little unpredictability.

Sitting still too long can stifle their energy and creativity.

Gold

Gold personalities prefer structure, clear expectations and routine.

They find comfort in order and responsibility.

Blue

Blue personalities are the connectors.

They are the nurturers and encouragers … those who value relationships, creativity and emotional connection.

Green

Green personalities are curious problem-solvers.

They love exploring ideas, designing systems and creating innovative solutions.

We all have a bit of each “color” within us, but one or two tend to shine more brightly in each of us. When you understand your natural order, you can recognize your gifts … and also identify the areas that may not come as easily.

The True Colors Experience

Of all the personality tools I’ve used, Don Lowry’s True Colors program remains one of my favorites.

It’s accessible, memorable, insightful and most of all, I see my clients walk out of the room and use the learning right away!

I’ve delivered True Colors workshops to clients across industries … from healthcare to retail to education … and every single time, participants walk away with new appreciation for themselves and others.

The True Colors framework isn’t about labeling people … it’s about learning how to esteem ourselves and others. It helps people feel good about who they are while also understanding how to stretch and grow in areas that don’t come as naturally.

That’s why I’m so excited that True Colors has become a core part of the learning at Cherokee Creek Boys School. At the next Family Seminar, CCBS students, staff and families will participate in an interactive True Colors workshop. Together, they’ll explore their individual color profiles, learn what motivates them and discover how to communicate more effectively … with each other and as a family.

These workshops are always lively, eye-opening and fun. Families laugh as they recognize themselves in the descriptions (“That’s so you, Dad!”) and start to see how each person brings a different kind of strength to the family dynamic.

Personality Tools and Self-Esteem

At its core, True Colors is about self-esteem … about helping each person recognize how they feel good about themselves, add value and have gifts that matter. When children and adults alike understand what makes them unique, they begin to see themselves more positively.

In my experience, that shift in self-perception can be transformational. A boy who once thought, “I can’t sit still; I’m bad at school,” may discover that his Orange energy is actually a strength … it’s creativity, enthusiasm and a need for active engagement. When his teachers and parents see that, too, everyone wins.

Toothless Lion CartoonTrue Colors is not about changing someone to fit a mold. As the saying goes, “To remove the fangs of the lion does not create a domesticated cat … it creates a toothless lion.”

We don’t want to take away a child’s natural energy or personality; we want to understand it, respect it and help him channel it in positive ways.

That’s exactly what happens at CCBS. By teaching boys (and their families) about their personality styles, the school helps them appreciate their individuality and learn how to work effectively with others who may be very different.

Building Understanding in Families

“When you share a working, mutual understanding of others’ core values and needs, you have the basis to communicate, motivate, and achieve common goals with utmost dignity, efficacy, and mutual respect.”

Don Lowry, Creator of True Colors

I’ve seen True Colors make a tremendous difference in families. When parents and children discover their colors together, empathy grows. The “messy” creative Blue child suddenly makes sense to the structured Gold parent. The logical Green dad learns why his spontaneous Orange son craves fun and flexibility.

These insights don’t just make home life smoother … they strengthen emotional bonds. They allow families to communicate with less judgment and more understanding.

That’s a huge part of the Cherokee Creek experience: family involvement is woven throughout a student’s entire time at the school.

CCBS provides ongoing opportunities for parents to learn alongside their sons … through family workshops, seminars and support resources. Learn more about those offerings in our Family Center / Family Support.

The Bigger Picture: How Profiles Build Better Communities

In workplaces, I’ve seen personality and style programs improve everything from customer service, to teamwork, to leadership effectiveness and the bottom line.

True Colors Mosaic

In schools and families, they build empathy and confidence.

The principles are the same everywhere … understanding ourselves and others leads to better relationships and stronger communities.

At CCBS, that understanding helps boys learn not only academics but also life skills: self-awareness, collaboration and compassion. It gives them the language to describe what they’re feeling and the confidence to navigate challenges in positive ways.

And because the CCBS team regularly uses True Colors in their communication and planning, it’s become part of the culture … a shared language that helps students, staff and families find common ground and solve problems together.

A Final Thought

One of the things I love most about Cherokee Creek Boys School is that they see every boy as a whole person … a learner, a thinker and a member of a family and community.

Tools like True Colors simply help illuminate what’s already there: the unique combination of strengths, values and potential within each child.

When we understand who we are … and learn to value who others are … we grow in empathy, confidence and joy.

That’s the kind of learning that lasts a lifetime.
