Helping Boys Show Up, Be Present and Grow Stronger … with Courage
As a new year begins, many families find themselves reflecting on growth – especially when raising boys between the ages of 10 and 15.
This stage of life brings rapid change, big emotions and important opportunities to build character. At Cherokee Creek Boys School, character development is not an add-on … it is the foundation of everything we do.
Our approach is rooted in cultural anthropologist Angeles Arrien’s Medicine Wheel Model, shared in The Four-Fold Way.
This timeless framework centers on four essential values – Courage, Truth, Love and Wisdom – each representing a vital direction in human development.
During the winter and early spring, our community focuses on Courage, defined by Arrien as “showing up and choosing to be present.”
Courage and Character Development
Courage is associated with the archetype of the Warrior, not as a fighter, but as someone who lives with integrity, bravery and decisiveness.
For young boys navigating adolescence, this value helps them:
- Face challenges with confidence
- Make thoughtful, ethical choices
- Better understand themselves
- Align actions with personal values
- Strengthen family relationships through honest communication
As Arrien reminds us, “Courage is the measure of our heartfelt participation with life.” When boys learn to show up – especially when things feel uncomfortable – they begin building resilience that serves them for a lifetime.
At Cherokee Creek Boys School, these values are intentionally woven into daily life through our Character Development program and our broader therapeutic, relationship-based model.
