The Medicine Wheel at Cherokee Creek Boys School
At Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS), our character-development curriculum is the foundation for each student’s and family’s journey.
At its core, our curriculum is a model based on four timeless values:
Courage (the Warrior), Truth (the Visionary), Love (the Healer) and Wisdom (the Teacher).
Together, they form what we call the Medicine Wheel.
Originally created by cultural anthropologist, Angeles Arrien, and described in her book The Four-Fold Way, the Medicine Wheel reflects what she called “perennial wisdom” … values shared by at least 85% of the world’s cultures.
At CCBS, we adapt this framework so that it speaks directly to boys ages 10 – 15 and their families, guiding them toward discovering who they are, what they value and how they want to show up in the world.
A Year-Long Journey in Character Development
Fall is the Time to Focus on Wisdom and The Way of the Teacher
One of the unique ways CCBS brings the Medicine Wheel to life is by dedicating each quarter of the school year to one of its four directions and values.
This rhythm allows students and all of us to experience, reflect on and practice each quality in depth.
- Winter focuses on the Warrior … building Courage.
- Spring brings the Healer … living with Love.
- Summer turns to the Visionary … seeking Truth.
- Fall completes the cycle with the Teacher … embracing Wisdom.
As we enter the Fall Season in September, we can all walk the path of the Teacher. This focus on Wisdom invites all of us to pause, reflect and trust the lessons that come from experience. It is a season of discernment and balance … a fitting way to close the year with clarity and purpose.
Who Is the Teacher?
Understanding Wisdom in Our Own Character Development
The Teacher represents Wisdom … a quality we all carry within us, but one that grows stronger with reflection and practice. Wisdom isn’t just about knowledge or intelligence. It’s about discernment, trust, objectivity and the ability to live with openness instead of clinging to control.
One of the central lessons of the Teacher is this: “Be open to outcome, not attached to outcome.”
When we let go of trying to force results, we gain clarity and perspective.
We can see more choices, trust more deeply and act with more resilience when life doesn’t go as planned.
The Qualities of Wisdom
Wisdom has many faces. At CCBS, we talk with our students about how wisdom shows up in everyday life:
- Clarity | The ability to see a situation as it truly is, not as we wish it to be.
- Objectivity | Stepping back from emotions to make fair and thoughtful choices.
- Trust | Being willing to live with uncertainty and let go of the illusion of control.
- Non-Attachment | Freeing ourselves from grudges, old hurts and rigid expectations.
Why Wisdom Matters for Boys … and for All of Us
Adolescence is a time of rapid growth. Boys at CCBS are learning not only math and science, but also how to manage big emotions, handle friendships and make decisions aligned with their values. This is where Wisdom … the Teacher … becomes so important in character development.
When boys learn to trust themselves, pause before reacting and stay open to life’s uncertainties, they develop a kind of inner compass. This compass helps them navigate challenges like peer pressure, self-doubt and conflict.
And it doesn’t stop in adolescence. Adults, too, benefit from returning to the Teacher within. Wisdom is the part of us that says:
I don’t have to have all the answers.
I can ask better questions.
I can trust the process
Practical Ways to Bring the Teacher into Daily Life
Here are a few simple practices for nurturing the Teacher within:
Pause Before Responding
A breath or brief pause can prevent rash reactions and create space for wiser choices.
Create Grounding Rituals
Daily journaling, walking or quiet reflection can help build steadiness in uncertain times.
Let Things Go
Write frustrations on sticky notes and throw them away … symbolically releasing what no longer serves you.
Ask More Questions
Instead of seeking quick answers, practice curiosity: What can I learn? What am I missing?
Sort Needs from Wants
Wisdom helps us recognize what is essential versus what is just a desire.
Questions to Ask the Teacher Within
Reflection helps the Teacher emerge. Try asking yourself:
- Who has been a teacher or mentor in my life and what did I learn from them?
- What experiences have shifted my perspective or served as “wake-up calls”?
- Where might I need to let go of control and trust more?
These small self-checks can guide us toward clarity, resilience and balance.
Cherokee Creek Boys School: A Place to Learn Wisdom
Character Development in Action
At Cherokee Creek, the Teacher’s path is not just a philosophy … it’s a lived experience. Each boy is paired with a Primary Mentor who helps him explore these values in real life.
Through academics, outdoor adventures, community living and family involvement, boys learn that Wisdom is about more than “being smart.”
It’s about building character, resilience and balance.
Summary
The Teacher … the part of the Medicine Wheel representing Wisdom … reminds us to live with clarity, trust and openness to outcome.
At CCBS, boys ages 10 – 15 discover that wisdom is not about controlling the future but learning from the present. With reflection, trust and curiosity, they learn to carry wisdom with them into every season of life.
Wisdom lives within each of us. The Teacher reminds us that while we can’t control the outcome, we can always learn, grow and move forward with openness.
