Boy-Friendly Environment

— A Place Where Boys Can Be Boys —

“What are
little boys made of?
Frogs and snails
And puppy-dogs’ tails.
That’s what little boys
are made of.”

– Nursery Rhyme

Neuroscience has definitively proven what seems so obvious … boys and girls are different!

There are over 100 identified differences in the brain structure of boys and girls. Developmental processes are different. The hormonal make-up is different. It stands to reason that the academic, physical and social needs of boys and girls are different as well.

At CCBS, we have designed a “boy-friendly” environment in all of our classrooms and throughout our entire curriculum. And, we are proud to be the first therapeutic boarding school named a Gurian Model School by best-selling author and expert, Michael Gurian, who has done extensive research regarding the differences in the brain between boys and girls.

“Most teachers are not trained in how boys and girls learn differently.”

– Michael Gurian

Here are a few of the ways “BOYS can be BOYS” at CCBS:

  • Classroom modifications like yoga balls and standing desks can help any boy who feels the need to move in class or any student with ADHD
  • Small classroom size
  • Field trips, outdoor classrooms, experiential opportunities
  • Pets in the classroom
  • Studying heroes to identify role models demonstrating strong character and emphasizing the importance of living by our values
  • Character education and social skills training
  • Leadership and community service opportunities
  • Active and diverse sports program
  • Free time for recreation and hobbies
  • TREKS … weekend wilderness adventures
  • Celebrations, rituals and rites of passage to acknowledge and honor successes and milestones
