Phil brings a variety of talent, skill and experience to Cherokee Creek in the areas of business, teaching, communication, outdoor adventure, engineering and construction. He has been a part of an international leadership team at Sports Illustrated that sets up and transmits stories and photographs live from the Olympics (including the games in Salt Lake City and Sydney, Australia) and other national sporting events. For fourteen years Phil worked with Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, North Carolina serving as an Experiential Learning Consultant, Instructor and Guide, Manager of Photography, Lead Kayak Instructor and he also served on their Board of Directors. Complementing his outdoor experience – he completed National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming. Phil also managed and opened new stores for Wilderness Equipment in Houston, Texas.

Phil graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering and worked for Brown and Root Engineering and Construction in Houston, Texas as a Civil Engineer. He has also worked as a Timber Frame Craftsman, for Upper Loft Design, in Lakemont Georgia, on design, construction and improving the efficiency of raising frame homes. Phil has a dual role at the school. His background with many different organizations contributes to his role as Director of Operations; His engineering, carpentry and design skills come in handy when teaching math in the classroom or helping our students with outdoor activities and construction projects.

According to Phil, “ “I came to work at Cherokee Creek because I appreciate the holistic approach and the integration of outdoor recreation and nature with academic learning! I enjoy helping our students learn lessons from the environment and contributing to their lives ”

Beth Black, President and Founder says, “Phil is a tremendous asset to Cherokee Creek. The versatility of his experience and his grounded, gentle spirit make him an excellent role model for our boys and adds to the strength of our team.”

Phil is originally from Baltimore and is also proud of his strong southern roots in the Carolinas and Texas. He has a passion for the outdoors, loves natural science, carpentry, timber framing, kayaking and hiking. Fortunately for Cherokee Creek - he has studied photography extensively and many of his photos are seen here on the Cherokee Creek website.
